“Well, how did I get here?”
...from Once In A Lifetime by David Byrne & Brian Eno
There’s a good reason to include a musical connection in my bio - I’m a Gemini with two passions: great food & good music.
I got my first job as a busboy just as I was entering my first year at Ballard High School - where my most significant contribution was hiring the band for the Senior Trip. I opened my first restaurant in 1970 while attending college in Ellensburg, and shortly thereafter, moved back to Seattle where I learned how to actually run a restaurant. In 1977, I opened Edible’s Soup, Salad, Sandwich & Breakfast in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Success and a desire for “country livin’” led me to Duvall, where I lived and owned The Silver Spoon Restaurant from 1978 through 1985. Our years at the old Grange Hall became legendary for great food and the occasional concert upstairs. Long-time Seattle Times food critic – John Hinterberger, once called the Silver Spoon Brownie “so good I scrutinized them for flecks of green (in vain)”. But it was the concerts at the Spoon that led to a 25 year career in the music business as a venue owner, concert producer, talent buyer, and consultant. Now, I’ve been drawn back to my favorite lifetime experience – running a small café in a small town. By the way, don’t be surprised if you hear my iPod blasting away from the kitchen. If you're not sure about the artist being played and curious, just ask me. I’ll likely have a great story about a time when I produced one of their concerts.
I do hope you’ll visit us here in Stanwood. We look forward to serving
delicious baked goods, great coffee, wholesome hot entrees and more to
our new neighbors and friends.
